It is believed that the Seychelles islands were uninhabited before European exploration , although Arab and other Indian Ocean sailors may have known of the islands long before they were settled.French explorers and settlers arrived in the 18th century and established a small colony , bringing people from Africa ,India,and other parts of the Indian Ocean.However , Seychelles then was a small group of islands with a very small population,mainly made up of settlers ,enslaved Africans , and workers brought from other regions.Most people relied on fishing ,farming and coconut cultivation for their livelihood.Over time ,the islands developed under French and later British rule , eventually becoming the independent nation of Seychelles in 1976.
