New York
It is believed that the area now known as New York was originally inhabited by Native American peoples, including the Lenape and Haudenosaunee, long before European arrival. In the early 17th century, Dutch settlers established a trading post on Manhattan Island and named it New Amsterdam. The settlement grew as a centre for trade and commerce, attracting people from many different backgrounds.
However, New York then was a small colonial settlement with a relatively small population. Most inhabitants relied on trade, farming, and fishing for their livelihood. It was only after the English took control of the colony in 1664 and renamed it New York that the settlement began to expand, eventually becoming one of the world's largest and most influential cities.
