It is believed that Māori explorers were the first to discover and settle New Zealand after travelling across the Pacific Ocean in large ocean-going canoes many centuries ago. According to Māori legends, the great navigator Kupe discovered the islands and shared stories of the land’s beauty and resources. These stories have been passed down through generations and remain an important part of New Zealand’s cultural heritage.
However, New Zealand then was made up of small Māori tribal communities living across the islands, relying mainly on fishing, farming, and hunting. The population was spread across different regions, with each tribe having its own leaders and traditions. It was only later, with the arrival of European settlers and British rule, that New Zealand began developing into the modern nation it is today.
